What is Mental Health?

Mental health refers to our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It influences how we think, feel, and act, and affects how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is not just the absence of mental illness but also the presence of positive traits like resilience, self-esteem, and emotional regulation.

Ways to Improve Mental Health

  1. Practice Self-Care: Prioritize activities that promote relaxation and self-reflection, such as meditation, yoga, or spending time in nature.

  2. Maintain Healthy Relationships: Cultivate supportive relationships with friends, family, and community members who uplift and validate your experiences.

  3. Stay Active: Regular exercise has been shown to boost mood, reduce stress, and improve overall mental well-being.

  7. Get Adequate Sleep: Prioritize getting enough sleep each night, as sleep plays a crucial role in regulating mood and cognitive function.

Signs Someone May Need Treatment

  1. Persistent Sadness or Hopelessness: Feeling sad or hopeless for an extended period, to the point where it interferes with daily functioning.

  2. Changes in Behavior: Noticeable changes in behavior, such as withdrawal from social activities, increased irritability, or difficulty concentrating.

  3. Unexplained Physical Symptoms: Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomachaches, or unexplained aches and pains that have no medical cause.

  4. Substance Abuse: Increased use of drugs or alcohol as a way to cope with emotional distress.

  5. Extreme Mood Swings: Rapid shifts in mood, from extreme highs to extreme lows, that are not typical for the person.

  6. Suicidal Thoughts or Behaviors: Expressing thoughts of suicide or engaging in self-harming behaviors.

  7. Difficulty Functioning: Struggling to perform daily tasks, such as going to work or school, maintaining relationships, or taking care of personal hygiene.
